Removable plates can be immersed in water, but it is usually advisable not to put them in your dishwasher.Remove the plates from the waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Waffle iron grid plates usually snap out easily.Immerse the plates in warm water in your sink or in a shallow dish of warm water. Non-stick plates should never be cleaned with soap because the non-stick surface will eventually deteriorate from the soap.Gently clean the plates with a non-abrasive scouring pad or a soft-bristled kitchen brush.Rinse the waffle grid plates in warm water.

Most modern electric waffle irons come with non-stick plates, but they do have to be cleaned without immersing the appliance in water.

Remove any small puddles of oil with a dry paper towel.Remove any batter that is still stuck to the plates with a rubber spatula.

Pour a generous amount of cooking oil on any bits of batter that cannot be removed with a brush or a spatula. Let the oil soak into the crusted batter for several minutes so that the batter will soften.Use a dry paper towel to remove any remaining batter.Finish cleaning the plates with a damp dishcloth.

Remove especially stubborn encrusted bits by soaking a paper towel with ammonia and inserting the towel between the two waffle grid plates. Leave the paper towel between the plates for several hours before rinsing it with hot water.

Set the plates in a drying rack and allow them to dry thoroughly.Snap the plates back into the waffle iron.Clean the outer parts of the unit with a damp cloth and allow them to dry completely before storing away your waffle iron.
